He married there, sometime in 1754, Judith, d/o Rowland and Lydia (FOWLER) NORTON. His will, dated 28 Oct 1815, lists property in Warner, N.H. and early letters imply that he may have lived there for a time; but, all of his and Judith's children were born in Amesbury. (60). Samuel5, GOODWIN (Samuel4, Samuel3, Richard2, Edward1), Revolutionary Sol. 16387 Samuel GOODWIN was born 15 May 1749 in Newton, N.H., s/o Samuel and Mary (WORTHEN) GOODWIN. He married, 11 April 1772 (Nt), Hannah GREAVES of South Hampton. Samuel first enlisted at Newton in Sep 1775 under Capt. John Calep. He was stationed at Fort Hutchinson on Great Island and served at Portsmouth, New Castle and Kittery in defense of Portsmouth Harbor. It was a four month enlistment but he served five and one-half months before discharge on 16 Feb 1776. He enlisted a second time on 08 Sep 1777 at Newton for three months under Capt. Ezra Currier and marched to Bennington, VT; then to Saratoga, NY;& was there when Burgoyne was taken; then "marched down North River and from thence home." He was discharged from his second enlistment 16 Dec 1777 (N.H. State Papers, Vols. 1, 2,and 10; N.H. Rev. Pension Records, Vol. 15). Samuel and Hannah had five children, all born in Newton. Samuel died 18 Oct 1842, age 93 and is buried in the old Rand Cemetery, North-field, N.H. with his son Moses. I have been unable to find a record of Hannah's death.

He served in the Rev. War at least one enlistment, being with Capt. David Place 05 Nov 1775 at Seavey's Island; and perhaps another with Col. Wingate at Ticonderoga (New Hamp. State Papers; Rev. War Rolls, Vols. I & 2). He m. 01 Nov 1770, Elizabeth BANCROFT of Wakefield, b. 1750 and settled in Rumford (Concord), N.H. The old Rumford Book of Deeds pps. 205 & 206 records that a "Samuel GOODWIN, yeoman, late of South Hampton (Newton), purchased two parcels of land; one from Abbott and another from Eastman.

Hoyt; marched to Portsmouth, N.H. where he served for 15 days under Capt. John Calef. He re-enlisted in Mar 1776 for six months to work on the Fort at Great Island under Capt. John Calef, Ensign M Bell and William Cooper in Col. Pierce Long's Regiment (N.H. Rev. Pen. Recds. Vol. 15, pps 128 & 129). Three monuments in the old cemetery behind the Newton Town Hall mark his and his wives' graves. In the old Town Records in Newton we find, "We give our approbation to Theophilus Goodwin to keep a house of public entertainment in the house where he now lives in Newton. Dated this 23rd day of March 1793. Robert Stewart, James Peaslee; Selectmen for Newton". Although he was referred to as Captain Goodwin in many of the town records following the War, his record shows that he served as a fifer with Captain John Calef on Great Island, 1775 (Hammond. 1895; Rolls of the Soldiers in the Rev. War and Rolls of the troops engaged in defense of Piscatagua Harbor,1775; p. 224).

Bailey guarding and scouting; and also under Capt. Simeon Stevens. John was a signer of the New York Petition of 1773 and lived at various times in Hampstead, N.H., Haverhill, N.H., Newbury, VT and Rygate, VT. He married a second time, after the death of Abigail, to Ann FOSTER.

Jonathan is listed as head of family in the New York census of 1771, and he signed the New York petition of 1773. He served in the Revolutionary War one month and 29 days, in Capt. John G. Bailey's Company, guarding and scouting and perhaps in other service. He settled in Newbury, Vt. on Hall' s Meadow, Lot 9, on land he bought from Thomas Shirley of Chester, N.H., in 1768. The deed was not acknowledged, but the title was confirmed by a special act of the General Assembly in 1785. Jonathan d. 28 Oct 1811, aged 71 (which would place the year of birth as 1740); and Elizabeth d. 08 Oct 1813, aged 73 (Which would place the year of birth as 1740). Simeon was a private in Capt. Jacob Bailey's Co. which marched to Oswego from Albany, N. Y. in 1759, near the end of the French and Indian Wars. He was also Adjutant in Colonel Israel Morey's Reg. 25 Sep - 26 Oct, 1777 in the Rev. War. He lived at various times Hampstead and Haverhill. N.H.; Newbury, VT and Marietta, Ohio, where he died 17 Aug 1823 (Wells, F. P., Hist. of Newbury, VT.)

This may have been Elizabeth's second marriage. An Elizabeth HEATH m. 24 Dec 1761 (Hmst), Daniel EMERSON. Richard m. 2nd, 09 Nov 1773, Elizabeth FLANDERS of South Hampton. Richard was a Rev. War Sol. He was a private in Capt. Benj. Emery' s Co., Col. Baldwin's Regt.; and a member of Capt. John Hale' s Co., Col. Gerrish’s Regt. at Saratoga in 1777 (Hammond, Vol. 1, p 408, and Vol. 2 pps 429 & 430). Richard removed to Newport, N.H. following the War, about 1780, settling on land which was later known as the Dr. Corbin place. Richard had five children by his first wife, Elizabeth HEATH; and one by his second wife, Elizabeth Flanders (Wheeler, Goodwin-Perkins, Noyes). He died 10 May 1821 and is buried with other members of his family in the Northville Cemetery, Newport, N.H. (Wheeler Hist. Newport, N. H., 1879).

Theopolis5 GOODWIN (Nathan4, Richard3, Richard2, Edward1), the s/o Nathan and Rhoda (COLBY) GOODWIN, Theopolis was b. 21 Sep 1753 (Hmst); m. 09 Mar 1773 (A), Abigail ADAMS of Rowley, Mass., b. 02 Sep 1750, d/o Israel and Deborah (SEARL) ADAMS. He was a Rev. War Sol.; was at Bunker Hill, on the expedition to Rhode Island, and was at Ticonderoga. He served with Capt. John Calef in Col. Pierce Long's Reg. from 07 Dec. to 07 Jan 1777 in the Continental Army (Hammond, Vol. 1, 1895 pps. 224, 380, 489,501, 514, 538 and 539). Theopolis and Abigail removed to Dunbarton, N.H., where their first three children were born. They moved again in 1784 to Newport, N.H. and settled near his brother, Richard. Theopolis died at Newport 07 Mar 1798 and is buried in the same lot with his brother Richard (The Goodwin Families of Newport, N.H., etc., by Charles A. Goodwin-Perkins).

Theopolis and Abigail had seven children, surnamed GOODWIN.
